History of the Farm

It all began in 1706 with an early settler of Haverhill, MA chopping out a plot of Wilderness to build a home, raise crops and a family.  Many families have kept it going through the years. Some of the fields are former sandpit and have had the topsoil regenerated through decades of careful management. Today, the Cox’s and Scholten’s have joined the chain of caretakers of the land and are continuing the farming tradition growing a variety of crops, raising animals, and improving the fertility.

Meet your Farmers

Don Cox, Farm Business Owner and Manager, grew up on a family farm in Oklahoma growing hay, cows, and pecans and helping his Grandmother in her garden.  He moved to Haverhill to keep his family’s farm alive in 2009 and has been growing crops and improving his skills since.

“Working with the land is a pleasure.  My goal is to keep the farm productive while improving the fertility and respecting the wild.”                                                                        – Don

Laura Scholten, Farm Manager, became interested in sustainable agriculture and homesteading after working as a teenager on neighbors’ backyard farms.  In her 20’s she volunteered on her University’s farm, studied the environment and creative writing, and volunteered on small organic farms in Costa Rica, Australia, and Norway.  Laura moved to Haverhill in 2013 and married Don Cox in 2014.

“Taking care of animals and conserving land for wildlife is very important to me.” -Laura
